Chickahominy Lake: Fishing Reports

Picture
January 2, 2019....Mixed
by Captain Art Conway

Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-514-1486) out of
Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water
temperatures were in the high 40’s to low 50’s in the main lake on Wednesday
(1/2/2019). Shallow areas were a little warmer. The lake level was about
six inches above the top of the dam. The water was light brown and slightly
cloudy in the central lake.

Blue cats and bullheads were along drop-offs and in channels in the main
lake and when active were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Most crappie
were on drop-offs and in channels in the main lake, especially near wood
cover. Activity varied, with the occasional active crappie hitting live
minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin
crappie scrubs, blade baits, and small swim baits.

Yellow and white perch
were scattered or in loose aggregates on deep flats, drop-offs, and channels
in the main lake, and when active were hitting live minnows, small swim
baits, and small jigs. Most bluegill and shellcracker were along drop-offs
or in channels and when active were tentatively hitting live worms, Nikko
nymphs, and small swimbaits. Some bass and pickerel were along shorelines
on sunny days, but most were on deeper flats, along drop-offs, or in
channels in the main lake and occasionally in creeks. When active, bass and
pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick worms,
crank baits, jerk baits, and jigs.

Live bait fishermen are taking pickerel, bass and crappie. Brushpiles are holding all three species and are difficult to find. Once found, however, coolers can be filled in little time.

Anglers are catching lots of bass, crappie and pickerel around the submerged brushpiles on points. Live minnows are producing well, although crappie jigs are taking numbers of fish after they are located. Large bass, pickerel and bowfin are being caught deep-jigging.

I caught 9 black crappie today, at a completely different body of water than the last few times, testing my locating skills. Most of them were 10in.+ with 11in. being the biggest. The 200 acre lake I fished isn't known for big crappie, but I know there has to be some big ones in there!

The wind was my worst enemy today since it was swirling in all directions, even my marker buoy didn't help me keep position in my kayak.

Edit: All fish were released back into the water to heal and grow bigger, hopefully.
